Is it safe to visit Romania?
According to several databases, Romania is a generally safe country. For instance, the Global Terrorist Database ranks Romania on position 138/163. This essentially certifies that no terrorist attacks have taken place here.
Another important datase is the Global Peace Index. This particular metric ranks countries based on militarization, society and security, as well as domestic and interest conflict. Romania is on position 22 out of 163 in this index.
Crime rate is at a low level in Romania. However, you may still encounter pickpockets. Furthermore, corruption is still a major issue in our country. If authorities offer you a ‘mutually beneficial’ solution to a problem and it seems shady, you should refuse and seek legal justification.
Need to Know before traveling to Romania on Transylvania Vacation Packages
- Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
- Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
- Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
- See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
- Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
- Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.
Driving
If you choose our Transylvania Vacation Packages, you should know that we provide transfer between all the included attractions. Depending on the size of your group, you will travel either by car, minibus or coach. You will only need to rely on public transportation or drive yourself if you decide to wander off on your own, outside of the planned itinerary.
Inside cities, pay attention at drivers around you as some of them might break the law (speeding, crossing red lights, risky overtakes). It’s always best to avoid an unpleasant incident if possible. If you drive yourself to a certain attraction, we recommend planning ahead as parking spots can be really hard to find. You will most likely not be able to park in the immediate vicinity of your destination. This is why you should research and know in advance where you can find the nearest parking lot.
Outside cities, you will drive a lot on National Roads, which go across many villages. Around these villages, look out for carts or animals on the road. Due to poor infrastructure and the large number of villages on the way, National Roads usually get quite crowded.
Pickpocketing
Pickpockets are usually present in crowded places. They usually operate in buses or at the subway. The targets are people who are not paying attention at their belongings. They will cut open your bag or purse and disappear with your items before you can realize what happened. Our advice is to always keep the bag you are carrying within eyesight.
According to Romanian laws:
- Always carry photo ID – you should keep the original passport or ID card somewhere safe and carry photocopies with you
- You are prohibited from taking photos of airports, military sites or other secure locations (this includes drones – be careful, as you might have a non-pleasant surprise if you accidentally fly a drone in military airspace)
- Penalties for drug offences are severe. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail. Authorities are focusing more on finding the dealers rather than the users, but it’s always best to avoid getting in trouble
Travel Insurance
You should get travel insurance whenever you are going abroad. It will be very helpful in case of unexpected situations. For instance, travel insurance covers healthcare. If you find yourself in need of medical services, you should know that they can get quite expensive outside your own country and you may not receive free care or even subsidized costs. However, if you have a good travel insurance, your insurer will cover the necessary costs.
Transylvania Vacation Packages – Costs
One of the most important aspects when you decide to book a tour is it’s price. Knowing the exact costs can help you plan your budget accordingly. The price of an itinerary can vary depending on its length, inclusions and special events. It goes without saying that private tours have different costs than their regular counterparts.
Guaranteed itineraries depart on set dates, usually for a large group of tourists. Meanwhile, tailor made tours allow you to choose your own departure date and travel with your group of friends or family members only.
On average, a 7-Days Tour in Transylvania costs around €1200, while a 3-Days Short Break is priced at around €650. For the exact prices, please check each tour’s dedicated page.
Costs for 11-Days Study Trips
Our Study Trips are designed for large groups of students. These are the longest and most complex itineraries in our catalog. The students are accompanied by a tour leader – usually a teacher – who travels free of charge. For the others, the prices depend on which itinerary you choose:
- The ‘Transylvania’s Undying Legend’ edition costs €1287 or €1576 for single rooms
- The ‘Dracula Tours for Schools’ edition costs €1557 or €1837 for single rooms

While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Travel Costs in Romania
Our itineraries include transfers between attractions. Depending on how many travelers we gather in a group, we can provide a car, minibus or even a coach. If you decide to extend your stay and explore our country outside the planned itinerary, we have a few helpful tips.
The most popular way to move around a city is the bus. This is also the cheapest option. However, buses are very crowded and there’s a chance you might encounter pickpockets. If you decide to take the bus or the subway train, make sure your belongings are always within eyesight.
Taxi Rides
You can also choose to move around by taxi, but, in this case, you should look out for drivers who are attempting to scam tourists. If you are under the impression that the taxi is circling around, you should check out the route on a GPS application. Some drivers take advantage of people who don’t know the city and extend the ride in order to increase in the sum on the meter. Furthermore, avoid taxi drivers who attempt to negotiate the fare in advance. They will usually propose a sum that’s significantly larger than what the ride is worth.
Alternatives include ridesharing services like Uber or Taxify, where you know the final cost of the ride in advance. If you have multiple destinations, you could be better off renting a car and driving yourself around.
Budget Your Trip reveals that travelers spend about 79 lei/day on local transportation. This is an average sum which will be different depending on whether you travel by bus or by taxi.
